Chapter Ten: Alexander

“Where are we going?” she asked when we passed another sign for Storyland.

“It’s a theme park,” I answered.

“I didn’t know there was one in the area.”

“I live nearby, and I’ve heard about it but honestly, I’ve never paid any attention to it. I thought about what you said last night and did a little research.”

“Really?” she said with excitement.

“I want you to show me what’s so great about them. I want to feel that same joy you feel when you talk about them.”

She was silent as she stared out the window, but I could feel her excitement. It was contagious. I felt more relaxed than I’d been in years. I pulled into the parking lot that was relatively empty. It clearly wasn’t a big park. Luckily the rain had let up and the sun was trying to peek through.

We entered the park through a gate with a colorful banner over the top. “Storyland,” she mused to herself and she walked underneath it. “I wonder why I’ve never heard of it.”

“The guide I looked at said it was one of the best kept secrets in the area.”

I watched her as she stopped and breathed deeply, taking in the sights and sounds of the small park. Suddenly, a broad smile on her face, she pointed to a booth advertising cotton candy.

“Have you ever had cotton candy?” she asked excitedly.

“No.”

“What! Oh my God! You have to try it.”

Three minutes later, I was holding a paper cone and eating air. Sweet, sugary air. “This is, uh, strange.”

She wiped my cheek with her thumb. “It’s also very sticky.”

“What’s that?” I asked, pointing at a ride.

“Bobsleds,” she answered. “Come on. It’s a fun one.”

I climbed in first, settling my back against the car. Gloria climbed in front of me, wedging herself between my legs. I couldn’t believe it was a family ride. The feel of her pressing against my crotch made me think of last night all over again.

The car began to move, thrusting her body even closer against mine. Her hair whipped around my face. The swath of exposed neck was too much for me to resist and I dropped my mouth to her flesh and kissed the soft uncovered skin . There was a pause and I was about to kick myself and my damn impulses, until I felt her relax and tilt her head to the side, revealing more skin. I pulled her to me and increased the pressure of my mouth, inhaling the fresh clean scent of her.

The ride came to a stop far too soon. She took my hand in hers and led me around the park. “In here,” she said, nodding at a haunted house.

“Isn’t this for kids?”

“We’re all kids if we want to be,” she replied and held up her wrist to show her bracelet to the ride manager.

I followed her inside the dark house. “This is actually pretty creepy,” I whispered. “How do you like this but hated the stairwell?”

“Because this is fun.”
